Oxford: Scientists have claimed that the world’s first ovarian cancer vaccine is being developed in the UK, which could help save thousands of lives in the future and eventually eradicate the disease.
Scientists at the University of Oxford are developing a vaccine called OvarianVax that teaches the human immune system to target ovarian cancer by identifying it in its early stages.
Experts are hopeful that the vaccine will be given to women on the NHS to prevent the disease in order to eradicate it.
Cancer charities have hailed the research as having the potential to save thousands of lives and save women from having their ovaries removed because of the BRCA gene mutation.
The vaccine news comes after Oxford scientists announced earlier this year that they had received funding to develop a vaccine.
Experts say that the effects of this vaccine on patients in clinical trials will be revealed in four to five years. While vaccines will take years to come into general use.
