Spanish scientists have warned that many foods that are said to be high in protein are actually high in fat.
The study found that these foods, which claim to make muscles strong and flexible, can potentially make consumers gain weight.
In the study, researchers examined more than 500 products, after which they found that one in every 10 products was actually healthy.
More than a quarter of the products were high in sugar and saturated fat, while 20% of the products contained artificial sweeteners.
Scientists from the Miguel Hernandez University said that consumers consider foods that claim to contain protein to be healthy. This view is wrong. Consumers are likely not aware of the health effects of other ingredients in these foods.
In the study, scientists examined 561 foods that claimed to contain protein. These foods include plant-based meat alternatives (68.2%), snack bars (35.3%), and high-protein yogurt or sweetened dairy products (21.3%).
