California: Instant messaging application WhatsApp is working on a new feature to replace users’ phone numbers with usernames to add an extra dimension to users’ privacy.
According to a report by WhatsApp Beta Info, WhatsApp is already rumored to be adding support for usernames.
However, the messaging platform is also working on a ‘PIN’ after which unknown users won’t be able to text you, just because they have your username. They also need to have your ‘username PIN’ to text you. This PIN is likely to be a 4-digit code.
According to the report, the feature was spotted in the latest version (2.24.18.2) of WhatsApp beta for Android. This feature is expected to increase privacy, as users you have never interacted with on WhatsApp will not be able to text you as such.
It should be noted that it is not yet confirmed when this feature will be introduced for Android and iOS users.
The report hinted that the feature is unlikely to be rolled out to the public before the end of the year.
The report states that this feature will give users more flexibility in managing their privacy experience.
However, WhatsApp will give users the option to turn it on or off if they want.
