New Delhi: We all exercise to keep our bodies fit but few think about mental exercises to keep our minds sharp and agile.
Dr Shailesh Jha, Consultant Psychiatrist at Indraprasth Apollo Sarthak Mental Health Services in New Delhi, said that engaging in mentally fit activities can delay diseases like Alzheimer’s and slow cognitive decline. .
They also say that when we challenge our brains with mental activities, we create new neural connections in our brains and strengthen existing ones, making our brains more resilient. These strong connections may delay Alzheimer’s symptoms.
Activities that challenge multiple cognitive domains in the brain such as attention, memory, executive functions and processing speed are beneficial. Such activities include learning a new language or engaging in complex problem-solving activities.
Apart from this, the following 5 mental exercises are also beneficial for mental health.
1) Reading
2) Solving puzzles
3) Learning a new skill or language
4) Memory sharpening games
5) Matter-based hobbies
