A new study suggests that weight loss pills containing the active ingredient semiglutide can help people quit smoking.
A recent study published in a journal suggests that semiglutide may be associated with cessation of smoking in people who require steps to quit smoking.
Researchers at the US National Institute on Drug Abuse analyzed health data from nearly 223,000 people. Among them were those with type 2 diabetes and tobacco addiction, and they used antidiabetic drugs.
About 6,000 study participants used semiglutide while others used one of seven other diabetes medications.
The scientists also reviewed electronic health data collected from the participants during the 12-month follow-up.
The study looked at whether these individuals had seen a physician for smoking cessation treatment or whether they had used smoking cessation medication or counseling within 12 months.
The study found that semaglutide was associated with a lower risk for smoking-related health care needs, such as counseling, compared with seven other antidiabetic medications, including insulin and metformin.
