A space company in Texas, USA, has successfully completed its first successful commercial lunar landing.
Firefly Aerospace sent its Blue Ghost mission to touch down on the lunar surface, which began operating every Sunday.
Blue Ghost’s chief engineer Will Coogan said on a livestream of the landing that “we are on the moon.” The announcement was followed by celebrations in the mission control room.
Buzz Aldrin, an American astronaut, announced Blue Ghost’s success in a Facebook post.
This is the latest in a series of attempts by commercial companies to land on the moon, but none have been successful so far.
Houston-based Intuitive Machines launched a commercial mission to the lunar surface last year, but the spacecraft landed near the moon’s south pole and stopped working.
