KARACHI: The University of Karachi has changed its admission policy after accepting some points of the new PhD policy introduced by the Higher Education Commission and the passing marks of the PhD entrance test have been increased from 50 to 60. .
Under University of Karachi, MPhil/PhD admissions are starting from June 23, while the entrance test will be held on July 28 and the session will start from September 1. In the new policy, the passing marks of the PhD entrance test have been increased from 50 to 60 and now the candidate securing at least 60 marks in the PhD entrance test will be considered successful, however, the passing marks of the MPhil entrance test. Only 50 will remain.
When contacted, Prof. Dr. Anila Amber Malik, convenor of the admission committee for post-graduate studies of the University of Karachi, told “Express” regarding the amendment of the admission policy and the recognition of certain points of the new PhD policy of HMC. According to the new policy of HEC, the passing marks of the test for admission to Ph.D. have been increased on the one hand, while on the other hand, the CGPR limit has been reduced from 3 to 2.6 in MPhil, which is about 70%. Marks are made, earlier this ratio was higher.
Dr. Anila Amber said that in the HEC policy, more relaxation was given in CGPA for admission to PhD after MPhil, but the academic council has stopped it at 2.6.
He said that the rules regarding paper publication in Ph.D. have been tightened and it is mandatory for the student to publish his paper in the X category journal, if not, then in the Y category journal. Two research papers have to be published, if the University of Karachi does not accept this condition, the student may face difficulties in registering himself in the “Pakistan Country Directory” (PCD).
He also informed that for the first time intra-disciplinary admission has been allowed at the MPhil/PhD level, according to which now a bachelor’s candidate from one faculty can apply for admission in another faculty and the conditions are fulfilled. But he can also be admitted, but these conditions will be determined by the concerned DRC (Departmental Research Committee), while in case of admission, the student will have to do deficiency courses of 9 to 12 credit hours.
To a question, Dr. Anila Amber said that among the conditions included in the new policy of HEC that were not agreed upon, one of the main clauses was to send the PhD theses to 500 top ranking universities for evaluation and otherwise. I had to send these theses to two distinguished professors.
However, he said that in many regulations there are no distinguished professors in the country and it is not necessary that all the disciplines in which the candidate is doing PhD are present in the five hundred top universities, so instead of this point, develop theses. Will be sent to countries. It should be noted that admissions are starting from next week.
