According to the law implemented by the European Union, only Type-C chargers will be used across Europe from today.
The principle of a uniform charger across the country was approved by the Council of the European Union in October 2022.
Manufacturers of electronic devices were given a period to adjust the design of their products and ensure compliance.
The uniform charger rules will apply to mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, video game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and earbuds.
However, from April 28, 2026, the Type-C charger rule will also apply to laptops.
Using a single charger also has several benefits, including:
Convenience for consumers
People will be able to charge their mobile phones and other similar electronic devices with a single USB-C charger and will avoid the hassle of buying and keeping different chargers.
Reduction in electronic waste
Wasted and unused chargers cause around 11,000 tonnes of electronic waste annually. The new rules encourage the reuse of chargers, which helps reduce environmental impact.
Save money
People can now buy new electronic devices without a charger. This will help consumers save around €250 million annually on unnecessary charger purchases.
Charging speed
The new rules help ensure that the charging speed is the same when using a charger for a device.
