Derby: Scientists have discovered a lost continent in the southern part of the Arctic Ocean that was formed six million years ago.
Researchers from the University of Derby in the United Kingdom accidentally discovered a 250-mile-long landmass while studying plate tectonics in the area beneath the Davis Strait between Canada and Greenland.
The researchers said the newly discovered proto-microbes were caused by long-term rifting (a process in which a tectonic plate splits into two or three plates due to different boundaries) and seafloor spreading.
According to the team of researchers, this proto-micro-Bri Azam separated from Greenland after the tectonic split between Greenland and Canada about 11.8 million years ago.
