EDINBURGH: Instilling saline drops into the nose can shorten the duration of flu in children by up to two days, a new study suggests.
Dr. Steve Cunningham, professor of pediatric respiratory medicine at the University of Edinburgh, said: “We found that saline nasal drops can reduce flu symptoms in children by 6 days, on average 8 days.
He added that children taking saline nasal drops also have less need for medication during illness.
Dr. Steve also said that children get 10 to 12 colds a year. Medicines like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can ease the symptoms, but no treatment has yet been identified to completely cure a cold.
