LAHORE: Cotton ginners went on a nationwide strike against the record increase in taxes and electricity rates in the federal budget.
Chairman Cotton Geners Forum Ehsanul Haque said that the decision to strike was taken in an emergency general body meeting of Cotton Geners, until the demands are approved, Cotton Geners will suspend the purchase of cotton and the sale of cotton.
Suspension of cotton purchase and sale of cotton may seriously affect domestic exports. Farmers may also face difficulties in selling cotton now that wheat is being sold at very low prices.
Currently 82% GST is levied on the ginning industry. The fixed electricity charges have been increased by about six lakh rupees per month, which will also have to be paid to the closed factories.
