Washington: Antidepressant drugs can improve memory and thinking skills, a new study suggests.
Researchers report that some patients experienced better results on mental tests after taking the antidepressant drug Lexapro.
According to findings recently published in the journal Biological Psychiatry, the drug appears to affect a serotonin receptor in the brain called the 5HT4 receptor.
Serotonin has been described as a feel-good hormone, the researchers said in their note. Higher levels of serotonin in the brain contribute to feelings of well-being and have been found to reduce clinical depression.
