Mohsin Naqvi Strengthens Bilateral Ties with Oman During High-Level Visit

Muscat, Oman – In a significant step toward enhancing bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Oman, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi paid a high-profile visit to the Oman Police and Customs Headquarters in Muscat. During the visit, he engaged in detailed discussions with senior Omani officials and met with members of the Pakistani community, signaling stronger diplomatic, security, and cultural ties between the two nations.

High-Level Meeting with Oman Police and Customs Chief

Upon his arrival at the Oman Police and Customs Headquarters, Mohsin Naqvi was warmly welcomed by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsin Al-Sharaqi, Chief of Oman Police and Customs. The meeting between the two leaders focused on strengthening cooperation in security, policing, anti-smuggling, and counter-terrorism efforts.

Both sides acknowledged the growing need for mutual collaboration to combat transnational crimes, particularly drug trafficking and human smuggling, which have become pressing concerns for both countries. The Omani side expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s longstanding support and contributions to regional stability, while also acknowledging the role of the Pakistani community in Oman’s development.

Enhancing Joint Operations Against Drug Smuggling

A key topic of discussion during the meeting was the need for closer coordination to curb the activities of drug and smuggling mafias operating across borders. Interior Minister Naqvi emphasized Pakistan’s recent internal measures to crack down on criminal networks, including the cancellation of passports of 50,000 individuals involved in illegal activities, barring them from international travel for the next five years.

He offered Pakistan’s expertise and training resources, proposing to host Omani police, coast guard, and customs officials at Pakistan’s state-of-the-art training academies. Pakistan’s offer reflects its growing reputation as a regional hub for law enforcement and anti-terrorism training.

Naqvi also extended an invitation to Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsin Al-Sharaqi to visit Pakistan for further collaboration, a gesture that was warmly received by the Omani official.

Visa Issues and Repatriation of Pakistani Prisoners in Oman

Another major concern raised during the meeting was the issue of Pakistani citizens facing visa difficulties in Oman. Interior Minister Naqvi thanked the Omani authorities for their willingness to resolve these challenges. He assured full cooperation from Pakistan’s side in formalizing immigration protocols and combating illegal immigration.

Naqvi also discussed the repatriation of Pakistani nationals imprisoned in Omani jails, offering full assistance in coordination with Omani officials. This move aligns with Pakistan’s broader policy to ensure the welfare and rights of overseas Pakistanis, a subject that has taken center stage under the current government.

Recognition of the Pakistani Diaspora’s Contributions

During his visit, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with the Pakistani community residing in Oman, including businesspersons, professionals, and laborers. The meeting was attended by key diplomatic personnel and community leaders. Naqvi praised the Pakistani diaspora for their tireless contributions to Oman’s economic growth, calling them a source of pride for the nation.

He reiterated that Pakistanis living abroad are ambassadors of their country, and urged them to uphold the values of unity, integrity, and patriotism. “Raising the green crescent flag high should be your top priority,” he said, underlining the importance of national identity.

Pakistan’s Regional Peace Stance Emphasized

Addressing the regional security environment, Naqvi emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to peace, highlighting the country’s role in regional stability and counter-terrorism. He stated, “Pakistan is a peaceful country and desires lasting peace in the region. But our peace efforts should not be mistaken for weakness.”

He further stressed that Pakistan’s armed forces are fully capable and prepared to respond to any hostile action, reinforcing Pakistan’s sovereignty and security posture. His statement received resounding support from the Pakistani community present at the event.

Resolving Community Issues on the Spot

In an exceptional move that drew praise from community members, Mohsin Naqvi personally listened to grievances and concerns raised by Pakistani expatriates. He took detailed notes and immediately issued instructions to the Director General of the Ministry of Interior to address issues related to FIA, NADRA, and immigration services.

Many community members expressed surprise and gratitude, stating that previous ministers had not taken such direct action during official visits. “You have won hearts by giving immediate orders,” said one community leader, applauding Naqvi’s practical and empathetic approach.

Institutional Coordination with the Embassy

Earlier in the day, Minister Naqvi also visited the Pakistani Embassy in Muscat, where he was introduced to embassy staff and diplomats. The Pakistani Ambassador to Oman provided a detailed briefing on the embassy’s operations and the vital role of the Pakistani community in Oman’s infrastructure and economic sectors.

Naqvi took a moment to record his impressions in the visitors’ book, recognizing the embassy’s efforts and reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to providing robust consular support for overseas Pakistanis.

Pakistan-Oman Relations: A Historical Perspective

Pakistan and Oman share a deep-rooted relationship marked by historical, cultural, and geographical ties. Oman is home to a sizeable Pakistani population, estimated at over 250,000, which has long served as a bridge between the two nations. The strategic proximity of Gwadar Port to Oman’s coast has also raised the stakes for economic and maritime cooperation.

In recent years, both countries have worked to intensify bilateral trade, defense cooperation, and diplomatic exchanges. Oman has consistently supported Pakistan’s stance on major regional issues and has welcomed Pakistani professionals in various sectors including engineering, healthcare, and construction.

Looking Forward: A New Chapter in Pakistan-Oman Ties

Mohsin Naqvi’s visit comes at a time when Pakistan is actively seeking to strengthen ties with Gulf nations and leverage its regional partnerships to foster peace and development. His engagements in Muscat reflect Islamabad’s renewed diplomatic vigor and a clear message that overseas Pakistanis remain a priority for the government.

By offering training support, facilitating immigration reforms, and actively engaging with the Pakistani diaspora, Naqvi has set a new standard for ministerial outreach abroad. This visit not only cements law enforcement cooperation but also opens doors for greater political, economic, and people-to-people linkages between Pakistan and Oman.

Conclusion

Mohsin Naqvi’s visit to Oman was a multifaceted diplomatic success, encompassing high-level security talks, community engagement, and embassy coordination. His proactive measures to address key issues—from illegal immigration and smuggling to consular support—underscore a broader vision of inclusive foreign policy and diaspora empowerment.

As Pakistan continues to navigate regional challenges and forge stronger international ties, such visits highlight the country’s strategic focus on diplomacy, internal security, and welfare of overseas citizens—a triad that is critical to Pakistan’s future standing on the global stage.
