Maryam Nafees Speaks Out on Societal Biases Against Women in Showbiz
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Lahore – Popular Pakistani actress Maryam Nafees has once again highlighted the persistent social stigmas and prejudices that women in the entertainment industry face, saying that “showbiz women are still considered bad in society.”

In a candid interview during a morning show on a private television channel, the actress addressed the double standards prevailing in society, especially regarding independent women and those working in the showbiz industry.

A Voice for Women in Entertainment

Maryam Nafees, known for her roles in popular Pakistani dramas like Yakeen Ka Safar and Diyar-e-Dil, is among a growing number of actresses who are challenging stereotypes and speaking out against social discrimination. In the morning show interview, Maryam did not hold back in expressing her views about the deep-rooted biases faced by women, particularly those who choose to pursue careers in the entertainment world.

“Even today, in the 21st century, women who work outside the home, especially in showbiz, are seen with disapproval. There is a mindset that considers us less respectable just because of our profession,” Maryam said.

The Ongoing Struggles of Showbiz Women

Despite the increasing visibility and success of Pakistani actresses in the national and international arenas, women in this field continue to battle social stigmas. Maryam explained how society often looks down upon female actors, labeling them unfairly regardless of their background or the values they uphold.

“There are educated girls from all kinds of families working in the entertainment industry, but still, our work is not considered good or respectable,” she lamented.

Maryam’s statements shed light on a wider cultural issue in South Asian societies, where entertainment careers are often associated with negative stereotypes, especially for women. Many believe that the public visibility and perceived glamour of the job somehow make it incompatible with traditional values — a notion that many in the industry are striving to change.

Living Alone as a Woman: Another Taboo

Maryam Nafees also highlighted the challenges of being a single, independent woman in Pakistan. She spoke about the suspicion and judgment women face when they live alone or manage their own lives without male guardianship.

“Even now, women who live alone face many problems. People don’t accept that a woman can take care of herself or live independently without any ulterior motives being attached to her,” she said.

This attitude reflects broader issues of gender inequality, where women’s independence is often viewed as rebellion or moral transgression rather than personal or professional growth.

Double Standards and Moral Policing

The actress also brought attention to the hypocrisy in societal attitudes, where men are given more freedom, but women are scrutinized for every action, especially those working in the entertainment business.

“There’s a clear double standard. Men can go out, work in any field, and live on their own, and they are praised for it. But when women do the same, they are questioned, judged, and even shamed,” she emphasized.

Maryam’s comments resonate with many female professionals in Pakistan who frequently deal with moral policing, unsolicited advice, and character judgment, especially on social media.

Maintaining Faith and Religious Duties in Showbiz

Challenging another popular misconception, Maryam Nafees clarified that being in the showbiz industry does not equate to being un-Islamic or non-religious. She shared that many actors and crew members on drama sets are deeply spiritual and ensure they do not miss their religious obligations.

“During drama shoots, many artists offer prayers. We make sure not to neglect our religious duties. This is not an industry that is divorced from faith,” she added.

This is an important clarification, as religion and morality are often weaponized against those working in entertainment, further perpetuating the belief that showbiz is incompatible with Islamic values.

A Broader Cultural Problem

The issues Maryam highlighted go beyond the entertainment industry. Her words reflect a deep-rooted patriarchy and societal conservatism that impacts women across professions in Pakistan and similar societies. While progress is being made and more women are entering media, law, politics, and medicine, social acceptance still lags behind.

Media professionals argue that until there is respect and dignity for all forms of honest work, no real gender equality can be achieved. Maryam’s courage to speak out shines a light on the urgent need for cultural change, where women’s freedom, careers, and choices are not vilified but respected and normalized.

Maryam Nafees: A Strong Female Voice in Pakistani Entertainment

Maryam Nafees has long been a vocal advocate for women’s rights and frequently uses her platform to raise awareness about social issues. She has spoken out on matters such as domestic abuse, mental health, and patriarchal control, gaining admiration for her outspokenness and courage.

Born and raised in Islamabad, Maryam entered the entertainment industry as a young, determined actress and quickly rose to fame through her strong performances. Despite the fame, she remains grounded and passionate about bringing meaningful change to Pakistani society.

Her popularity and voice as a public figure make her statements all the more impactful, especially for young women who look up to her as a role model.

Social Media Reaction and Support

Following her appearance on the morning show, many fans and fellow artists expressed support on social media, praising her for her honesty and boldness.

Comments on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) highlighted how relatable Maryam’s statements were for many working women across Pakistan. Some users pointed out that this is exactly the kind of discussion needed to change public perception of working women, particularly those in creative professions.

“Thank you, Maryam Nafees, for saying what many of us feel every day,” wrote one user on X.
“It’s time we change this mindset,” posted another.

Conclusion: Changing the Narrative

Maryam Nafees’ statements are a powerful reminder that while women in Pakistan have come a long way, much remains to be done to achieve true societal acceptance and gender equality. Her words call attention to the urgent need to end the stigma against showbiz professionals and acknowledge the contributions of women in all fields, without judgment or bias.

The entertainment industry, like any other, comprises professionals who are dedicated, ethical, and religiously observant. It is high time society updates its mindset and begins to respect talent, hard work, and personal choice, regardless of gender or profession.
