Jamaat-e-Islami has filed a contempt of court petition against Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab against the collection of municipal tax through electricity bills in Karachi.
Jamaat-e-Islami reached the court against the collection of municipal tax through electricity bills in Karachi, filed an application in the Sindh High Court against the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, Mayor Karachi.
The petition was filed in the Sindh High Court by Saifuddin Advocate of the opposition leader of the Municipal Corporation Jamaat-e-Islami through Usman Farooq Advocate.
According to the application, Mayor Karachi had submitted an affidavit regarding the establishment of the committee and approval from the council on the issue of municipal tax collection.
The petition stated that Mayor Karachi had assured not to levy tax on consumers with consumption less than 300 units, and the Municipal Commissioner had also issued a notification for setting up the committee on May 31. The members were part of the committee.
The petitioner said that in the first meeting on June 3, a dispute between the parliamentary leader of Tehreek-e-Insaf came up, the parliamentary leader of the People’s Party resolved the dispute and assured the meeting the next day, but on the same day, the mayor of Karachi held a meeting with the members of the People’s Party. And the opposition parties were not informed for the meeting.
The petition further stated that the issue of municipal tax was not included in the agenda in the City Council meeting on June 10, Mayor Karachi has clearly violated the affidavit submitted to the court, Mayor Karachi to K Electric. The collection of municipal tax should be prevented from agreement.
