A new study suggests that low levels of essential vitamins or minerals are common in people with type 2 diabetes.
Overall, 45 percent of type 2 diabetics suffer from multiple deficiencies of vitamins, minerals and electrolytes, the researchers reported in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health.
Dr. Dayakrishnan Mangal, a professor at the International Institute of Health Management Research in Jaipur, India, said the study highlights the double burden of malnutrition among diabetics. People who try to control their diabetes through diet also suffer from malnutrition.
For evidence, the researchers pooled the results of 132 previous studies involving more than 52,500 participants between 1998 and 2023.
The researchers found that very low levels of vitamin D were the most common, in more than 60 percent of patients with type 2 diabetes.
