Washington: A new study has warned that widely used facial acne creams may be contaminated with carcinogens, especially if they are kept at room temperature.
After researchers tested 111 products available in major US markets, they found that creams containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) also contained high levels of benzene.
Brands tested containing benzoyl peroxide included Claricell, Clean & Clear, Neutrogena, ProActive, Up & Up and store brand equivalents.
When such creams are stored at room temperature and when exposed to ultraviolet rays from sunlight, benzoyl peroxide converts over time to the carcinogen benzene, which can cause cancer.
The researchers reported their findings in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
