A recent report revealed that there has been an alarming increase in autism diagnoses among American youth.
Autism has been widely diagnosed among girls and boys in the US, researchers report, with the incidence of autism nearly tripling in just over a decade.
Data from more than 12 million patients admitted to major US health care systems found that between 2011 and 2022, the number of people with autism will increase by 175%, according to research published in the journal JAMA Network Open. The percentage increased.
The increase in diagnoses was particularly high among young adults ages 26 to 34, the report noted. A 450 percent increase (equivalent to a more than 5.5-fold increase) in autism diagnoses was observed in this group between 2011 and 2022.
Although boys are still four times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with autism, the sex disparity is slowly closing, according to a team led by Luke Grosvenor of the Division of Research at Kaiser Permanente in Pleasanton, Calif.
