Washington: A cancer vaccine is just one step away from becoming a reality, according to a new study.
The vaccine, known as mRNA-4359, developed by the well-known company Moderna, is aimed at treating people with advanced melanoma, lung cancer and other solid tumor cancers.
According to preliminary trial results, the vaccine is designed to help the body recognize and fight cancer cells. The results show that the vaccine can stimulate the immune system to help treat the disease more effectively.
For a first-in-human study of the treatment, 19 patients with advanced-stage solid tumors were given one to nine doses of miRNA-4359.
The researchers discovered that eight of the 16 patients evaluated did not grow tumors or develop new tumors.
They also reported that patients tolerated the vaccine well without serious side effects of treatment.
The researchers called the findings “an important first step” in potentially developing a new treatment for people with later-stage cancer.
The vaccine, similar to the Covid-19 vaccine, is made using mRNA technology that teaches the immune system how cancer cells differ from healthy cells and triggers them to destroy them.
