Wahab Riaz Gears Up for Return in World Championship of Legends

Wahab Riaz Gears Up for Return in World Championship of Legends
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Introduction: Wahab Riaz Eyes Comeback in Legends Tournament

Former Pakistani pacer Wahab Riaz is set to make a cricketing comeback, reigniting his passion for the game by participating in the World Championship of Legends. The left-arm fast bowler, who has been associated with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in various roles since retiring from international cricket, is now gearing up to don the Pakistan Champions jersey. Alongside him, veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfaraz Ahmed is also expected to feature in the star-studded event.

Wahab Riaz’s Journey After Retirement

Wahab Riaz, who announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020, has continued to stay active in the cricketing world. He was appointed to significant roles within the PCB, including being one of five mentors for the Champions Cup, a PCB initiative to groom emerging talent. Despite the conclusion of that project, several mentors including Misbah-ul-Haq, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Saqlain Mushtaq, and Waqar Younis have yet to formally resign. Only Shoaib Malik has stepped down from his mentorship role, honoring the PCB’s directives.

The mentors, each drawing a substantial monthly salary of Rs 5 million, are likely to receive compensation of up to three months’ salary upon termination if they do not voluntarily resign. This has added financial strain on the PCB, which has been working to streamline its staffing and budgets post-Champions Cup.

Denied PSL Coaching, But Cleared for Legends League

Wahab had previously expressed interest in coaching and was even approached to become the bowling coach for Quetta Gladiators during the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, the PCB denied him a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for that role. The board, at the time, cited a conflict of interest given his active involvement in mentoring under the PCB.

Now, with the World Championship of Legends on the horizon, the PCB appears more accommodating. Sources confirm that Wahab is expected to receive a NOC to participate in the tournament, scheduled to be held in England later this month.

Wahab’s Future Aspirations: Coaching Pakistan Shaheens

Aside from reigniting his playing career, Wahab has expressed a strong desire to coach the Pakistan Shaheens, the national A team that serves as a feeder for the main squad. He was recently spotted offering bowling tips and guidance to young fast bowlers during a PCB skills camp, hinting at his potential future as a full-time coach.

This hands-on involvement has impressed many within the PCB, and insiders believe that Wahab could transition into a coaching role officially in the near future.

Star Power in the Pakistan Champions Squad

The World Championship of Legends is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated cricket events for fans eager to watch their favorite retired stars back in action. The Pakistan Champions squad for this year’s edition is stacked with notable names, including Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Sharjeel Khan, Asif Ali, Kamran Akmal, Aamir Yameen, Sohail Khan, Sohail Tanvir, and Wahab Riaz.

While Wahab and Sarfaraz have confirmed their participation, the inclusion of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan remains doubtful due to their commitments and uncertainty around their NOC clearance.

Tournament History and Expectations

Last year, the Pakistan Champions team reached the final but suffered a defeat at the hands of India. At that time, Younis Khan led the team, showcasing fierce competition between the arch-rivals even in legends cricket. This year, with a stronger and more experienced squad, fans are hopeful that Pakistan can claim the title.

The tournament will feature former international cricketers from around the world and will be held in various cities across England, giving fans in the UK a nostalgic treat.

PCB’s Policy on Former Players in Leagues

According to the PCB’s current regulations, former cricketers are permitted to participate in up to two franchise-based leagues per calendar year. However, they are not entitled to receive any salary from the PCB during their involvement in these leagues. This policy aims to provide flexibility while ensuring transparency and fairness in contractual obligations.

This clause applies to all former players, including those actively involved in PCB projects or roles. For Wahab, who has concluded his obligations in the Champions Cup, participation in the World Championship of Legends is well within the board’s stipulated guidelines.

Public and Fan Reaction: Nostalgia and Excitement

The announcement of Wahab’s return to action has sparked excitement among fans who fondly remember his fiery spells, especially his iconic performance against Australia in the 2015 ICC World Cup quarterfinal. Social media is abuzz with nostalgic posts and videos celebrating his comeback.

Cricket pundits have praised his continued passion for the sport and believe that his involvement in legends tournaments could serve as a bridge to a successful coaching career. Wahab’s experience, both on the international stage and in domestic leagues, could prove invaluable for grooming the next generation of Pakistani fast bowlers.

Conclusion: A New Chapter in Wahab Riaz’s Cricket Journey

Wahab Riaz’s return to cricket through the World Championship of Legends is a testament to his enduring love for the game. With an NOC likely in place and a strong support system behind him, Wahab is ready to inspire fans once more — not just through his bowling, but possibly through future coaching stints as well.

As the Pakistan Champions prepare to take on the world’s best retired players, all eyes will be on Wahab and his teammates to deliver a memorable performance. This tournament could very well be the beginning of a new era for Wahab Riaz — from pace spearhead to mentor, and now, perhaps, a champion once again.
