Australian opener Usman Khawaja has come under fire for not facing Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.
In the second innings of the first Test played in Perth, Usman Khawaja had sent new batsman Nathan McSweeney on strike to face Jasprit Bumrah, for which former cricketers Ravi Shastri and Michael Vaughan severely criticized him.
Former England commentator Michael Vaughan said that as a senior player, “I would have liked to hear Usman Khawaja tell the new player to let me strike first”.
Former opener David Warner said that “Usman may have asked Sweeney and he himself expressed his desire to strike first”.
Indian commentator Ravi Shastri said that “The new player should not have been asked, it is the responsibility of the team management and the captain to determine who will strike first, Usman should have faced first”.
