Washington: US President-elect Donald Trump has made a significant announcement that he will give the Chinese app TikTok 90 days to avoid a potential ban after taking office on Monday.
President Trump said in an interview with the American broadcaster that the 90-day extension is a move that is most likely to happen because it is appropriate. If I decide to do so, I will probably announce it on Monday.
TikTok, which is owned by China and is popular with about half of Americans, is playing a significant role in supporting small businesses and shaping online culture.
However, the US government has expressed national security concerns about the app, which has increased the possibility of a ban.
TikTok issued a statement on Friday saying it would not be blocked in the US until President Joe Biden’s administration reassures companies like Apple and Google that it would not face enforcement action if the ban goes into effect.
The situation regarding the ban has become more complicated after a law passed last year was unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday. The law gives TikTok until today to either sever ties with its Chinese parent company ByteDance or close its US operations.
