Damascus: US officials have arrived in the capital Damascus to meet with the new Syrian administration.
According to foreign media, US officials are in Damascus to meet with representatives of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham organization that overthrew Bashar al-Assad, which the US still considers a terrorist group.
The visit of the US delegation comes after recent visits by delegations from the United Nations, Britain, France and Germany, among others, and is the first official US diplomatic visit to Damascus in more than a decade.
The visits of US and European delegations after the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria reflect their policy of leaning towards Arab countries.
According to a US State Department spokesperson, the delegation of senior officials includes Assistant Secretary of State Barbara Leaf, US President Joe Biden’s special representative Roger Carstens and Senior Advisor for the Bureau of Near East Affairs Daniel Rubinstein.
The spokesperson says that US officials will speak directly with the Syrian people, they will discuss with civil society and members of various communities their vision for the future of Syria and will also ask how the US can help them.
