Washington: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned US President Donald Trump against ethnic cleansing in Gaza.
Addressing a UN committee meeting, the Secretary-General said that in trying to find a solution, we should not further complicate the problem. It is important that we remain true to the foundations of international law and avoid any form of ethnic cleansing.
Antonio Guterres stressed the two-state solution, saying, “We must re-acknowledge the two-state solution.”
Although Guterres did not mention Trump or his proposal regarding Gaza in his address, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that it could be considered a response from the secretary-general.
Earlier, Guterres also discussed the situation in the region with Jordan’s King Abdullah, after which Palestinian UN Ambassador Riyad Mansour told the committee that King Abdullah would deliver a unified message from Arab states to Trump in Washington next week.
Ambassador Riyad Mansour told the committee that we have no country other than Palestine. Gaza is a precious part of it. We will not leave Gaza.
He added that no power in the world can expel Palestinians from the land of our ancestors, including Gaza.
