Washington: The FBI has confirmed that President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees and members of his expected administration have received bomb threats in recent days.
The FBI has launched an investigation into the threats made to the families of these candidates.
According to the British news agency, Alice Stefanik, a New York Republican who has been nominated by Trump to be the US ambassador to the United Nations, said that her family had received a bomb threat.
Police are investigating the incident, in which one threat was received on Tuesday night and the other on Wednesday morning. Stefanik said she received the threats while she was traveling to New York with her husband and three-year-old son during the Thanksgiving holiday.
In addition, the family of Trump’s Commerce Secretary nominee Howard Lutnick was also threatened. The FBI did not name the people targeted, but New York police told the American broadcaster that Lutnik’s family had received a threat.
Lee Zeldin, Trump’s nominee to be administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, said his family had also been sent a message with a “pipe bomb threat” that spoke of supporting Palestinian rights.
Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz also faced threats, after a family member was sent a bomb threat in a Florida neighborhood. No explosives were found during a search of the area.
Trump’s nominee for CIA director John Ratcliffe and Defense Secretary nominee Pat Hegseth also faced threats.
The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are investigating the matter and are taking immediate steps to ensure the safety of those affected.
