Stockholm: The names of the scientists who will receive the Nobel Prize in Medicine (Medicine) 2024 have been announced. This year’s honor went jointly to American researchers Victor Ambrose and Gary Rovkun.
According to the announcement made by the Nobel Assembly based at the Karolinska Institute, the two scientists have been awarded this honor for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.
Laureate Professor Victor Ambrose is a developmental biologist from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, USA, while Gary Rovkun is a molecular biologist and Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, USA.
According to research, the information contained in our chromosomes can be compared to the physical instructions for all the cells in our body. Every cell has identical chromosomes, so every cell has exactly the same genes and exactly the same instructions.
Furthermore, different cells, such as muscle or nerve cells, have distinct properties. How do these differences occur? The answer lies in gene regulation that allows the selection of only relevant instructions in cells. This ensures that only the correct types of genes are activated in each type of cell.
