Islamabad: Telecom Operators Association has expressed serious economic concerns over the decrease in internet speed.
In a letter written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan Telecom Association said that the problem of internet speed will cause a decrease in domestic and foreign investment. The Association appealed to the Prime Minister for immediate intervention and requested to restore the speed of the Internet while examining the technical reasons for the disruption in the Internet.
The letter further states that the telecom sector is being adversely affected by the slowdown in internet speed. Internet traffic has decreased by 6,400 terabytes due to reduced speed. 12 billion per year to the telecom companies while the government will lose 3 billion rupees in revenue.
According to Pakistan Telecom Association, along with IT, trade, banking, health, education, financial sector and public sector organizations are also affected. Due to slow internet speed, projects of IT freelancers are getting canceled and freelancing website Fever has banned freelancers from Pakistan. The country’s GDP is suffering due to the decrease in internet speed.
