ISLAMABAD: The Election Act Amendment Bill was passed by majority vote in the Standing Committee, PTI opposed, JUI did not participate in the voting and PP did not participate in the meeting.
The meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs was held under the chairmanship of Chairman Rana Aradat Sharif. In the meeting, the bill to amend the Elections Act 2017 was taken into consideration. Bilal Azhar Kayani briefed the Standing Committee on the Bill.
Bitter words were exchanged between opposition member Ali Muhammad Khan and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Nazir Tarar.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar supported the bill and said that the amendments in the proposed law are in accordance with the constitution and law.
On the other hand, the members supported by PTI opposed the Election Amendment Bill. Committee member Shahida Akhtar Ali said that we have been and will continue to work for the supremacy of the constitution and the law. There are various laws.
JUI MLA Shahida Akhtar Ali said that the Election Commission was always making sandwiches, we are seeing the results of these amendments, such amendments should go into detail, the election amendment should be re-examined, the government should come forward and take the amendment. come
Ali Muhammad Khan said that the Election Commission created a political crisis in this country, the Election Commission took away the election symbol from a political party, the Election Commission should give its opinion on the restorative effects of this law.
Secretary Election Commission said that the Election Commission cannot give any opinion on this matter, the Law Ministry and Parliament can give their opinion about the effects of this bill, it is not our domain to give an opinion on the restorative effect of this bill.
Ali Muhammad Khan said that the children of our members are being picked up and blackmailed, the Election Commission is saying that we have not done anything, this time will pass.
Later, the Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs approved the Election Act Amendment Bill 2024 by majority vote. There were 6 votes in favor of the bill and four against. JUI MLA Shahida Akhtar Ali did not participate in the voting and said that she could not support or oppose the bill on its restorative effect. No PPP member attended the committee meeting.
The Election Act Amendment Bill will be presented to the National Assembly for approval on Friday.
