KHARTOUM: The head of a leading international aid agency has warned that Sudan is at risk of becoming another failed state due to the devastation of war.
The head of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) Jan Egeland said in an interview with the British news agency that the spread of armed groups in Sudan and the collapse of civil society are causing the country’s destruction.
According to Egeland, in addition to the ongoing war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, several small ethnic forces are involved in looting and uncontrolled violence, which has made the condition of civilians extremely poor.
“Various armed groups are destroying their own homes and killing their own people,” he said.
The 19-month-long war has displaced more than 10 million people and pushed the country to the brink of famine.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hunger has spread almost everywhere in Sudan, and aid agencies are facing insufficient resources to prevent a food crisis.
Egeland stressed that there is no hope of improving the situation in Sudan due to the lack of humanitarian assistance, and one of the horrific aspects of this war is that hunger is also being used as a weapon of war.
Food security experts have warned that 2.5 million people could die of hunger by the end of this year.
Egeland warned the international community that if urgent measures are not taken to help Sudan, Sudan’s statehood will completely fail, which would be disastrous not only for the country but also for the entire region.
He said That Europe must invest in aid, protection and peace efforts in Sudan to avoid a refugee crisis.
