Waziristan Joint Venture launches second successful well, boosting national gas supply and reducing import reliance.
Waziristan Joint Venture Begins Production from Spinwam-1, Inaugurated by Federal Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik
Islamabad, Pakistan — In a significant development for Pakistan’s energy sector, Spinwam-1 gas production has officially commenced in the Waziristan Block, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking a major milestone in indigenous resource development.
The project, operated by Mari Energies Limited under the Waziristan Joint Venture (WJV), was inaugurated at the company’s head office by Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik. Speaking at the ceremony, the minister highlighted that new discoveries like Spinwam-1 play a critical role in strengthening the country’s energy security, lowering dependence on imported fuels, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
Mari Energies’ Managing Director and CEO, Faheem Haider, stated that the launch of Spinwam-1 reflects the joint venture’s continued commitment to meeting Pakistan’s rising energy needs through local exploration. He emphasized that the project will enhance the reliability of gas supply to the national grid.
The well is the second successful discovery in the block after Shewa-1 and is currently producing around 40 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas along with approximately 200 barrels per day of condensate from the Lockhart formation. With this addition, total output from the Waziristan Block has reached nearly 100 MMSCFD of gas and around 800 barrels per day of condensate.

Officials noted that the successful completion of the project was made possible with strong support from law enforcement agencies, who ensured security in a challenging operational environment. Tribute was also paid to the sacrifices of security personnel, workers, and associated staff who contributed to the project under difficult conditions.
The initiative has been further strengthened by the completion of an SNGPL transmission pipeline, linking the Shewa-1 and Spinwam-1 discoveries to the national gas network, ensuring efficient distribution.
The Waziristan Joint Venture includes Mari Energies Limited as operator with a 55% stake, alongside OGDCL with 35% and Orient Petroleum Inc. holding 10%. The collaboration reflects a successful partnership model for energy exploration in complex regions.
With Spinwam-1 now operational, stakeholders have expressed optimism about unlocking further hydrocarbon potential in the area, contributing to Pakistan’s long-term energy stability and economic resilience.
