Malaysian Health Minister Zulkifal Ahmad said in a statement on the social networking website X (Twitter) that a picture of Foreign Minister Mohamed Hassan sitting at a roadside restaurant in the state capital of Samian smoking a cigarette went viral on social media. Smoking is prohibited in this area. The Foreign Minister will be fined for smoking in a prohibited area. The Foreign Minister’s office has been informed about this. The Foreign Minister expressed his desire to impose a fine himself for committing the crime.
Smoking has been declared illegal in restaurant areas and all food and beverage outlets in Malaysia since 2019 and measures were further tightened in October this year. Under the law, anyone caught smoking in areas prohibited from smoking can be fined up to 5,000 ringgit ($1,120).
