Shaheen Afridi Rejects Rumors of Rift: Calls Babar Azam and Rizwan Assets of Pakistan Cricket
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Lahore: Pakistan’s star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has strongly dismissed media speculations about internal rifts in the national cricket team. Speaking in a video interview released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), the left-arm pacer emphasized that senior players like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are invaluable assets for Pakistan cricket, while also stressing the need to nurture and trust the country’s emerging talent.

Shaheen’s statement comes at a crucial time, with the team preparing for the upcoming triangular series and the Asia Cup, tournaments that will shape Pakistan’s momentum ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Addressing the Rumors of Team Differences

Over the past few weeks, rumors had surfaced in cricketing circles and on social media about alleged differences among senior players in the Pakistan squad. Some reports suggested disagreements between Shaheen Afridi, Babar Azam, and Mohammad Rizwan over leadership approaches and strategies.

Shaheen Afridi, however, categorically denied such claims.

“The rumors spread about differences in the team are baseless. People from outside do talk, but the reality is the opposite. Just like trivial things happen in a family, they can also happen in the team. Our real goal is to play cricket for Pakistan and bring happiness to our countrymen,” Shaheen said.

By comparing the team environment to a family setting, Shaheen highlighted that minor disagreements are natural, but they do not impact the unity or performance of the squad.

Praising Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan

In his remarks, Shaheen lauded the contributions of Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam and vice-captain Mohammad Rizwan, calling them the backbone of the team.

  • Babar Azam has consistently ranked among the top batsmen in ICC rankings across formats, known for his elegant stroke play and ability to anchor innings.
  • Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, has established himself as one of the finest wicketkeeper-batsmen in T20 cricket, praised for his resilience and match-winning partnerships.

“Babar and Rizwan are assets of Pakistan cricket. Their presence gives strength and confidence to the dressing room,” Shaheen emphasized.

His remarks dispel doubts about strained relations and underline the mutual respect between senior and junior players.

Importance of Supporting Young Players

While recognizing the significance of experienced campaigners, Shaheen also stressed that the future of Pakistan cricket lies in backing young talent.

“The team can be made strong for the future only by trusting new players. If we show trust in the youth instead of criticizing them, it will be beneficial for us. They are also Pakistani players, and it is our collective responsibility to take them forward,” he explained.

This message reflects a balanced approach—valuing the stability provided by senior players while encouraging the development of newcomers such as:

  • Saim Ayub – an explosive top-order batsman known for his aggressive style.
  • Abrar Ahmed – a mystery spinner who recently impressed in domestic competitions.
  • Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel – reliable middle-order batsmen ready to prove their mettle.

By emphasizing inclusivity, Shaheen is promoting a healthy dressing room culture, where every player, regardless of experience, feels valued.

Preparation for the Triangular Series and Asia Cup

Shaheen Afridi also spoke about the team’s ongoing preparations in Dubai, where Pakistan is undergoing an intensive training camp ahead of crucial tournaments.

  • The second day of camp was described as “satisfactory”.
  • Players took part in night training sessions, simulating match conditions to adapt to the environment.
  • A warm-up match at the Dubai Stadium further helped players build confidence and fitness.

Shaheen noted that these preparations would prove valuable in both the triangular series and the Asia Cup, where Pakistan will face tough competition from top Asian cricketing nations.

“The triangular series will provide the national team with the best preparation opportunity before the Asia Cup,” he said.

T20 Cricket: A Format of Challenges

Shaheen admitted that T20 cricket is not easy for any team, given its unpredictable nature and high-intensity demands. However, he expressed confidence in Pakistan’s youngsters, who he believes are ready to take on the challenge.

“The young players Pakistan has are fully prepared and determined to perform at their best. The players are getting more time to prepare at the Dubai Stadium this time, which will improve the game and boost the team’s morale for big competitions,” he added.

This statement is particularly important, as Pakistan has historically struggled with middle-order stability in T20s, relying heavily on Babar and Rizwan at the top. The rise of young talent could provide the firepower needed in crunch situations.

Pakistan’s Roadmap: Triangular Series to Asia Cup

Shaheen outlined Pakistan’s immediate goals:

  1. First Priority – Triangular Series
The triangular series will serve as a testing ground for team combinations and strategies. Pakistan will experiment with different batting orders, bowling variations, and fielding combinations to find their best XI.
  2. Next Focus – Asia Cup
Once the triangular series concludes, the team will shift its focus to the Asia Cup. The tournament is not only a prestigious regional event but also a platform to gauge strengths and weaknesses before the World Cup.

“For now, our first goal is the triangular series, after which the focus will be on the Asia Cup,” Shaheen concluded.

The Bigger Picture: Pakistan’s World Cup Aspirations

Shaheen’s statements are not just about handling rumors but also about sending a message of unity and confidence ahead of global tournaments. With the World Cup approaching, Pakistan’s cricketing structure is under intense scrutiny.

  • Strengths:
    • A strong pace attack led by Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf.
    • Reliable top-order batsmen in Babar and Rizwan.
    • Improving spin options like Shadab Khan and Abrar Ahmed.
  • Challenges:
    • Middle-order inconsistencies.
    • Pressure handling in knockout matches.
    • Fitness concerns of key fast bowlers.

Shaheen’s reassurance of team unity is crucial in ensuring that players remain focused on cricket rather than outside noise.

Media Pressure and Public Expectations

In cricket-loving nations like Pakistan, rumors of dressing room rifts often dominate headlines. Players face constant scrutiny from fans, analysts, and former cricketers.

Shaheen’s calm and confident tone in dismissing such speculation highlights the team’s determination to remain united. By addressing the issue head-on, he has shifted the narrative back to on-field performances rather than off-field controversies.

Conclusion

Shaheen Afridi’s interview serves multiple purposes:

  • Reassurance of unity within the Pakistan cricket team.
  • Acknowledgment of the value of senior players like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.
  • Encouragement for young cricketers to be trusted and supported.
  • Confidence in Pakistan’s preparation for the triangular series, Asia Cup, and beyond.

As Pakistan gears up for a busy cricketing calendar, Shaheen’s words remind fans and critics alike that the team’s focus is singular: playing for Pakistan and bringing joy to millions of supporters worldwide.

With experienced stars, rising youngsters, and a unified dressing room, Pakistan looks ready to take on the challenges ahead.
