Washington: The United Nations Security Council has urged anti-government militants in the Democratic Republic of Congo to immediately cease fighting and withdraw from areas they control.
The Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for a ceasefire.
Troops from the M23 rebel group in eastern Congo have entered the city of Bukavu and are rapidly expanding the areas they control.
The resolution calls on the armed forces of neighboring Rwanda to stop supporting the M23 and immediately withdraw from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
UN Special Representative Bintu Keita has expressed concern that the M23 group may be planning to advance towards the capital Kinshasa.
