The genetics of the banana developed by British experts have been changed, due to which the fruit remains fresh and yellow even after being peeled for 24 hours.
Gild Gershon, chief executive of Tropic, a local biotech company in Norwich (which achieved this success), said that the banana they created rotted for at least 12 hours after being peeled and cut, and after 24 hours it rotted less than 30%.
He said that the taste, aroma, sweetness and appearance of these bananas are exactly the same as those of a normal banana, but the only difference is that its pulp does not rot quickly.
The company has extended this lifespan by inactivating enzymes called polyphenol oxidases (which cause bananas to rot).
The company Tropic has permission to sell bananas in the Philippines, Colombia, Honduras, the United States and Canada, where the company will begin launching this month.
