Saudi Arabia announced on Sunday the resumption of activities at its embassy in Kabul, three years after recalling its diplomats during the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
According to a report by the news agency ‘AFP’, the embassy said in a post on the social media site ‘X’ that ‘based on the desire of the Saudi government to provide all services to the brotherly Afghan people, it has been decided to resume the activities of the kingdom’s mission in Kabul from December 22.’
The Saudi Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the level of Saudi representation in Kabul.
It should be noted that Riyadh announced on August 15, 2021, that it had recalled its diplomats from the Afghan capital due to the ‘unstable situation’ caused by the Taliban’s return to power.
Later in November, Saudi Arabia said that it was only resuming consular services in Afghanistan. It also provides humanitarian aid in the country through its KS Relief organization.
Earlier this month, Russia took a step toward recognizing the Taliban government in Afghanistan when its parliament approved a law that would allow the Taliban to be removed from Moscow’s list of banned terrorist organizations.
However, no country has officially recognized the Taliban government.
