In a recent incident in France, a civilian woman suffered vision problems after using a product containing certain hair dye ingredients.
When the woman dyed her hair without ingredients called perfumed amines, her vision problems went away, according to a team led by ophthalmologist Dr. Nicolas Cherpaz of Lyon’s Edward Harriot Hospital.
The researchers said that such cases are rare but spreading awareness of the risk could encourage people to abandon such hair dye products to avoid permanent eye damage.
The team has published their case report on the incident in the journal JAMA Ophthalmology.
