According to the Reuters news agency, on the first day of the new Congress on Friday, Republican leader Mike Johnson was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives by a very narrow margin, receiving 218 votes in the first round.
According to foreign media, Mike Johnson received 218 votes while Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries received 215 votes. According to the report, three Republican members, Ralph Norman (South Carolina), Keith Self (Texas) and Thomas Massey, voted against Johnson.
According to international media, all Democratic members voted in favor of Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Republicans have now formally gained control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and members have also been sworn in.
