High-Level Delegation to Accompany the Prime Minister

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to depart for Saudi Arabia on a crucial three-day visit, aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing economic cooperation between the two nations. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will accompany the Prime Minister, alongside other key federal ministers and senior government officials.

Agenda of the Visit

According to a statement issued by Foreign Office Spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan, the Prime Minister will visit Saudi Arabia from March 19 to 22. The primary focus of this visit is to foster deeper collaboration in trade, investment, and economic partnerships. With Saudi Arabia being one of Pakistan’s closest allies, the visit is expected to further cement diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.

Meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

One of the key highlights of the visit will be Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The discussions are expected to revolve around cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, energy, and infrastructure development. Saudi Arabia has been a longstanding economic partner of Pakistan, with both countries engaging in multiple joint ventures over the years.

Focus on Economic Cooperation and Investment

Pakistan is looking to attract significant foreign investment from Saudi Arabia, particularly in the fields of energy, infrastructure, and technology. Saudi investors have shown interest in Pakistan’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and large-scale infrastructure projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The visit will provide an opportunity to discuss Saudi investments in these critical areas, potentially paving the way for increased economic collaboration.

Discussion on Regional and Middle Eastern Affairs

Apart from economic discussions, the meeting will also focus on pressing geopolitical issues, particularly the situation in the Middle East, including the ongoing conflict in Palestine. Pakistan has been a vocal supporter of Palestinian rights, and the Prime Minister is expected to discuss strategies with Saudi leadership regarding the humanitarian crisis and potential diplomatic solutions.

Strengthening Strategic and Defense Relations

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have historically maintained close defense ties, with joint military training programs and intelligence-sharing agreements. The visit may also cover discussions on enhancing defense cooperation, counterterrorism strategies, and regional security measures to ensure stability in the Middle East and South Asia.

Engagements with the Pakistani Community in Saudi Arabia

During his visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to engage with the Pakistani expatriate community in Saudi Arabia. The Pakistani diaspora plays a crucial role in strengthening economic ties between the two countries, contributing significantly through remittances. The Prime Minister’s interactions with Pakistani workers and professionals will reaffirm the government’s commitment to their welfare and highlight initiatives for their support.

Prospects of Saudi-Pakistan Economic Agreements

Saudi Arabia has previously pledged multi-billion-dollar investments in Pakistan’s energy and infrastructure sectors. This visit could potentially lead to the signing of new agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs) aimed at boosting economic ties. The establishment of an oil refinery project and collaboration in renewable energy sources are expected to be part of the discussions.

Conclusion

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Saudi Arabia is a pivotal step in strengthening Pakistan-Saudi relations, enhancing economic cooperation, and discussing regional security matters. With a comprehensive agenda covering trade, investment, defense, and diplomatic issues, this visit is expected to yield significant outcomes for both nations. The high-level engagements during the trip will not only reinforce diplomatic ties but also create new avenues for strategic partnerships between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
