VATICAN CITY: The Vatican has said that Pope Francis is being treated for a ‘complex clinical situation’ and will remain in hospital for as long as necessary.
The 88-year-old Pope Francis was admitted to the Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Friday where he was treated and tested for bronchitis.
The Vatican said yesterday that the Pope has a ‘polymicrobial infection’ in the respiratory tract, which requires a change in his treatment.
A later update added that the Pope is in stable condition and does not have a fever. He has also done some work and reading while in hospital.
A statement added that Pope Francis has been touched by the numerous messages of love and closeness he has received in recent hours.
It should be noted that the Pope had been showing symptoms of bronchitis for several days before his arrival last week and had entrusted officials with the responsibility of reading prepared speeches at events.
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni also told reporters yesterday that the Pope’s health was significantly improving.
The Vatican statement added that the Pope’s weekly general audience, which is usually held every Wednesday, has been canceled for this week.
