PECA Amendment Act 2025 has been challenged in Lahore High Court, in which the federal government, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and others have been made parties.
Journalist Jafar Bin Yar has challenged PECA Amendment Act 2025 in Lahore High Court, in the petition filed through lawyer Nadeem Sarwar, the federal government, PTA and others have been made parties.
The petition has taken the position that last week the National Assembly passed bills related to amendments to PECA, the addition of new punishments in the PECA Amendment Act will also lead to the loss of freedom.
The petition further states that the PECA Bill was brought without consulting the relevant stakeholders and journalist organizations, the approval of the PECA Amendment Bill will severely affect the freedom of expression given in the Constitution, the amendment act is unconstitutional and contradicts the protection of freedom of expression given in the Constitution.
The petitioner has requested that the court declare the PECA Amendment Act unconstitutional and declare it null and void and make the proceedings under the Amendment Act subject to the final decision on the petition.
It should be noted that after the approval of the National Assembly last week, the Senate also approved the controversial PECA Amendment Act 2025 yesterday.
