The Grand Jirga held in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for peace could not reach a peace agreement on Tuesday as well, with the implementation of the agreement between the warring parties being delayed due to the non-attendance of two representatives from Lower Kurram.
On Monday, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif had claimed that he expected the peace agreement to be signed by Tuesday.
However, speaking to Dawn on Tuesday, he said that two members of the jirga representing the Sunnis of Lower Kurram could not attend the meeting.
Barrister Saif said that the agreement has already been signed by Upper Kurram while both the parties have also agreed on the main points of the agreement, claiming that the signing of the formal agreement is just a formality, which will be done after the meeting of both the parties today (Wednesday).
Kurram Deputy Commissioner Javedullah Mehsud told Dawn that one of the representatives from Lower Kurram, former senator Rashid Ahmed Khan, could not attend the meeting due to the death of a close relative.
The official said that the Kurram peace agreement has already been signed by Upper Kurram, adding that the two sides will meet again at 11 am today to sign the agreement.
Malik Saeed Asghar, a jirga member from Parachinar, confirmed to Dawn that they have already signed the peace agreement, but since the other side was not present on Tuesday, they will meet again on Wednesday.
A day earlier, Barrister Saif had said that after the agreement, both sides will have to return their weapons and demolish their bunkers, after which the roads leading to Parachinar will be opened.
