ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has proposed transboundary water cooperation and the nexus of water, environment and climate change as key themes for inclusion in the dialogue of the 2026 UN Water Conference.
Addressing the organizational session of the 2026 UN Water Conference at the ECOSOC Chamber, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed stressed that the conference provides a crucial opportunity to accelerate global efforts to achieve SDG 6 target “Ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all”.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar highlighted the importance of the discussion, saying that it is directly linked to the future of future generations. He warned that time is running out and implementation remains a fundamental challenge.
The Pakistani alternate delegate said that the additional themes proposed by Pakistan are particularly important for developing countries as they can help promote regional integration, peace, and sustainable development, as well as address the impacts of climate change.
He added that focusing more on these themes would provide opportunities for countries to address common challenges, best practices, and integrated solutions.
He said that our ‘Living Indus’ and ‘Recharge Pakistan’ projects in Pakistan provide multiple benefits, including environmental protection, adaptation, improvement of water quality, addressing flood risks, and preserving biodiversity.
