RAWALPINDI – The Pakistan Army, along with the country’s top military leadership, has paid heartfelt homage to Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider) on the occasion of his 67th martyrdom anniversary. The solemn remembrance was marked with messages of respect, gratitude, and pride for the unparalleled bravery and sacrifice of this national hero.

The tribute was led by Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military), Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military), Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military), and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu (Nishan-e-Imtiaz Military). The combined statement reflected the unified spirit of the armed forces in honoring the sacrifices of Pakistan’s martyrs.

A Hero Who Wrote History with His Blood

Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed is remembered as one of the most valiant soldiers in Pakistan’s military history. On August 7, 1958, during a fierce battle in the Lakshmipur sector of the former East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), Major Tufail displayed extraordinary courage and leadership under enemy fire.

Despite being critically injured, he continued leading his men, engaging in close combat, and ensuring the mission’s success. His selflessness and determination ultimately cost him his life, but his valor turned the tide of the battle in Pakistan’s favor.

For his unmatched heroism and supreme sacrifice, Major Tufail Muhammad was awarded Pakistan’s highest military honor, the Nishan-e-Haider. He became the second recipient of this prestigious award after Captain Muhammad Sarwar Shaheed.

The Battle of Lakshmipur – A Turning Point

The operation in the Lakshmipur sector was critical for safeguarding Pakistan’s territorial integrity. Hostile forces had established a position in the area, threatening national security. Major Tufail, who was commanding a company of the East Pakistan Rifles, was tasked with clearing the enemy position.

Under the cover of darkness, Major Tufail led his troops to within 15 yards of the enemy bunkers. However, the enemy detected their movement, opening heavy machine-gun and mortar fire. Undeterred, Major Tufail charged forward, throwing grenades into the enemy posts and engaging in close combat with his rifle.

Even after receiving multiple bullet wounds, he crawled towards the enemy’s machine-gun post, silenced it, and ensured his troops could secure the area. Moments later, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of unparalleled bravery.

Nation’s Pride and Symbol of Sacrifice

In its official statement, the Pakistan Army called Major Tufail Shaheed a “beacon of courage, dedication, and patriotism.” It stated:

“The sacrifices of Major Tufail Shaheed and all our martyrs are the pride of the nation. Their courage, dedication, and love for Pakistan will always serve as a guiding light for future generations. These great sons, who gave their lives for the security and sovereignty of our beloved homeland, will forever live in our hearts.”

The Army further emphasized that the freedom, peace, and stability enjoyed by Pakistan today is a direct result of the sacrifices of martyrs like Major Tufail.

Nishan-e-Haider – Pakistan’s Highest Military Honor

The Nishan-e-Haider is awarded posthumously to members of the armed forces for acts of extraordinary bravery in the face of the enemy. Named after Hazrat Ali (RA), known as “Haider” for his courage, this decoration is a symbol of supreme gallantry.

Major Tufail Muhammad’s name is etched among an elite group of soldiers who have received this honor. His story is taught in military academies, schools, and history books, ensuring that his sacrifice is never forgotten.

Commemorations Across the Country

On his death anniversary, various events were held across Pakistan to honor Major Tufail’s memory. Wreaths were laid at his mausoleum in Tufailabad, Arifwala, where military officials, local dignitaries, and members of the public gathered to pay their respects.

Special prayers were offered for the soul of the martyr and for the security and prosperity of Pakistan. Educational institutions also organized seminars and essay competitions to highlight his bravery and the importance of defending national sovereignty.

Inspiration for the Youth

The legacy of Major Tufail Shaheed is not just a tale of war but a lesson in leadership, perseverance, and patriotism. His willingness to risk his life for his country serves as an inspiration for Pakistan’s youth. Military officials often cite his courage during training sessions to instill a spirit of selflessness in new recruits.

Retired officers who served alongside him remember him as a humble yet determined officer, always leading from the front and sharing the hardships of his men.

Pakistan Army’s Commitment to Martyrs

The Pakistan Army has repeatedly stated that it will never forget the sacrifices of its martyrs. Welfare programs, memorials, and anniversaries are part of a broader effort to keep their memory alive. COAS Asim Munir has emphasized that honoring martyrs is a moral responsibility, as they are the true guardians of the nation’s freedom.

The Army’s tribute to Major Tufail also reflects its ongoing commitment to defend Pakistan at all costs. By highlighting his heroics, the military sends a clear message to adversaries: the spirit of sacrifice is deeply rooted in Pakistan’s armed forces.

Family’s Perspective – Pride Mixed with Loss

The family of Major Tufail Shaheed continues to be honored guests at national and military events. They express immense pride in his sacrifice but also acknowledge the personal loss they endured. His relatives often share stories of his discipline, kindness, and unwavering love for Pakistan.

For them, his recognition as a national hero is a source of comfort, knowing that his sacrifice contributed to the nation’s security.

A Call for National Unity

Major Tufail’s sacrifice is a reminder that defending the nation requires unity and resilience from all Pakistanis, regardless of region or background. His courage in East Pakistan in 1958 underscores that patriotism transcends geography.

As Pakistan faces evolving challenges, from regional tensions to internal security threats, the spirit of unity and sacrifice demonstrated by heroes like Major Tufail remains more relevant than ever.

Conclusion – A Legacy That Will Never Fade

Sixty-seven years after his martyrdom, Major Tufail Muhammad Shaheed’s name continues to shine brightly in Pakistan’s history. His bravery in the Lakshmipur sector remains an unmatched example of courage under fire.

The Pakistan Army’s tribute is not just a ceremonial gesture—it is a reaffirmation that the sacrifices of martyrs form the foundation of the nation’s freedom. As Pakistan moves forward, the story of Major Tufail will continue to inspire generations to serve, protect, and love their homeland.
