PYONGYANG: North Korea has ratified a defense treaty with Russia.
The ratification announcement comes days after Ukraine said its forces had clashed with North Korean troops in the Kursk region of the Russian border.
North Korean state media reported on Tuesday that the country had ratified a mutual defense treaty with Russia. The treaty calls for the two sides to come to each other’s aid in the event of an armed attack.
The treaty was ratified on the orders of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
The agency said the agreement would take effect from the day the two sides exchanged ratification documents.
Last week, Russian lawmakers also voted unanimously to ratify the treaty, after which Russian President Vladimir Putin signed it and North Korea has now announced its ratification.
The agreement also stipulated that either country would provide military assistance without delay in the event of an attack on the other.
