Lahore: Former Pakistan cricket team captain Inzamam-ul-Haq has reacted strongly to former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar’s recent statement.
Gavaskar had termed the Pakistan team as weak and claimed that it was not even capable of competing with India’s B team.
Sunil Gavaskar had criticized Pakistan’s performance in the ICC Champions Trophy in a recent interview and said that it would not be easy for the current Pakistan team to defeat India’s B team.
He specifically targeted Pakistan’s batting line-up and said that Pakistani batters do not seem to have the ability to win matches. He also called the lack of strong back-up players in Pakistan a major weakness.
The former Indian captain said that Pakistan has always produced talented players, but in recent years it has failed to develop a batting line-up that can meet world standards.
Gavaskar, referring to Inzamam-ul-Haq in particular, said that it is surprising that Pakistan has not been able to produce a talented batsman like him so far. He added that the Pakistan Super League is a big domestic tournament, but so far it has not produced as many quality batsmen as was expected.
Inzamam-ul-Haq reacted strongly to Sunil Gavaskar’s statement and advised him to be careful in his choice of words. He said that Gavaskar is a senior cricketer, he is respected, but it is not appropriate to talk about another country’s team in this way.
The former Pakistani Test captain said that he should look at the statistics before his statements and speak thoughtfully. He added that if the Indian team has performed well, then he should praise his team, but it is unnecessary to use such words about another country’s team.
Inzamam-ul-Haq warned Gavaskar to choose his words carefully and avoid unnecessary criticism. He said that cricket is a game and every team has its own strengths and weaknesses, but it is not appropriate to publicly describe any team as inferior.
