REDMOND: Hackers linked to the Iranian government tried to hack the account of a ‘high-ranking official’ during the US presidential campaign in June, Microsoft researchers said.
A report released Friday said the violations were part of a growing effort by Iranian groups to influence the U.S. presidential election in November.
The report follows recent statements by senior US intelligence officials that they have seen an increase in Iran’s use of secret social media accounts aimed at creating political instability in the US.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York rejected the allegations, telling Reuters in a statement that its cyber capabilities are defensive and related to the threats it faces and that it has no intention of launching cyber attacks.
Responding to the allegations made in the Microsoft report, the mission added that the US presidential election is an internal matter in which Iran will not interfere.
