Scientists have developed a new drug that can successfully block two major Alzheimer’s hotspots simultaneously.
The drug, RI-AG03, targets spots in the brain that promote abnormal deposits of a protein called tau. This protein accumulates around brain cells and is a major cause of brain function decline.
There are two specific hotspots in the brain where tau proteins accumulate.
According to Lancaster University scientists, current treatments target a single spot, but RI-AG03 can target both spots and inhibit tau.
In the study, the team of researchers tested the drug in lab-dish studies and on fruit flies. The study showed that RI-AG03 prevented accumulation of tau proteins at both spots.
The team included scientists from the University of Southampton, Nottingham Trent University, Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Medical Science and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
