Karachi: Keshav Maharaj broke the 64-year-old record and won the title of South Africa’s most successful Test spinner.
Maharaj, who made his Test debut in November 2016, has so far picked up 171 wickets in 52 matches. He took 8 wickets in the first Test of the series against the West Indies yesterday and also won the Man of the Match award.
The 34-year-old spinner took 5 wickets for 45 runs in the first innings of the second Test, the Proteas won the second match by 40 runs and took the series 0-1.
He became the most successful South African Test spinner with 171 wickets, before Hugh Tefield, who retired in 1960, took 170 wickets in 37 Tests.
Dale Steyn remains the most successful fast bowler with 439 wickets in 93 Tests, Shaun Pollock (421), Makhaya N Thine (390), Alan Donald (330), Morne Morkel (309), Kegasu Rabada (299), Jack Kells (291) and Vernon Philander (224) also feature in the list.
