NEW YORK: A meeting of the United Nations Security Council has been called today on the issue of Israel’s attack on Iran.
According to the report of the foreign news agency Reuters, the President of the United Nations Security Council, Switzerland, has called a meeting to discuss Israel’s attack on Iran.
Switzerland’s mission to the United Nations said the Security Council meeting was requested by Iran and supported by Algeria, China and Russia.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi wrote in a letter to the 15-member Security Council that the Israeli government’s actions have posed serious threats to international peace and security and will further devastate the already tense region.
He wrote that Iran reserves its right under the principles laid down in the UN Charter to respond legally and reasonably to these attacks at an appropriate time.
On the other hand, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, has rejected the complaint made by Iran in the Security Council and said in a statement that Iran is trying to act under the cover of diplomatic boundaries through baseless claims against us. Israel is violating international law.
“As we have said many times, we have the responsibility and the right to defend ourselves and we will use everything to protect the citizens of Israel,” Danny Dean said.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called on all parties to halt military operations, including those in Gaza and Lebanon.
He said that maximum efforts should be made to prevent the spread of war in the region and to return to the diplomatic path.
