Occupied Jerusalem: Israel’s new military chief Eyal Zamir has admitted that Hamas has not been completely defeated and the mission is not yet complete.
Speaking at a swearing-in ceremony in Tel Aviv, Eyal Zamir said, “Hamas has been severely damaged, but it is not over yet, our mission is still there.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said on the occasion that Israel is determined to achieve complete victory in the war being fought on many fronts. These statements have come at a time when the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza appears to be in danger.
On the other hand, Arab leaders have supported a plan under which Gaza would be rebuilt under the Palestinian Authority, but Israel has rejected the proposal.
Eyal Zamir replaces General Herzi Halevi, who resigned after taking responsibility for the army’s failures following the October 7, 2023 attack.
An internal Israeli military review also acknowledged a “complete failure” that prevented the attack.
The October 7 attack killed 1,218 Israelis, while 48,405 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza so far as a result of Israeli military action in response, the vast majority of whom are civilians.
